| ARLENE SHECHET “Mirror Mirror” Shechet’s quirky and surprisingly effective installations of lumpen hydrocal Buddhas and cast-paper vases, is an unheralded show that’s pure pleasure. The Buddhas, touched with runny, wayward color, and the vases, perched on their own molds and glazed with bluprint ink (from plans for stupas), exude joyous creativity–filtered through the requisitelayers of concept, process, and skepticism. With at lest one elephant headed Ganesh and a trio of red, yellow, and blue gems worthy of the maharaja, this show strikes a nice balance between playfully inept, the unpredictable, and the miraculous. Through May 22, Elizabeth Harris Gallery, 529 West 20th Street, 463-9666. (Levin) |
