| ARLENE SHECHET, Elizabeth Harris, 529 West 20th Street, Chelsea, (212) 463-9666 (through tomorrow). This deliberately rough-hewn, offbeat, touching show consists of cast hydrocal Buddha figures in various sizes, interspersed with the conical forms of miniature stupas – memorial mounds, often of enormous size, found throughout Asia. Some of Ms. Shechet’s figures are wrapped in bandagelike cloth, their features obscured. Others seem to melt like little waterfalls. Much of the work is daubed and splashed with paint. The collective effect is of a sculpture workshop with everything in progress, not quite there yet. But then, “in progress” is the Buddhist way (Cotter). |
